Your Guide to the 2026 Lead Free Plumbing Requirement

Australia’s lead free plumbing rule takes full effect on 1 May 2026.

From that date, all copper alloy plumbing products that encounter drinking water must contain no more than 0.25% lead. They must also be certified with the Lead Free WaterMark.

What’s Changing

From 1 May 2026, all new installations must use lead free, WaterMark-certified products. That includes taps, bottle refill stations, drinking fountains, and valves.

Only products listed in the WaterMark Product Database will be compliant after the deadline.

This requirement is now part of the National Construction Code (NCC) and is managed by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB).

Why a Three-Year Transition?

The transition period from May 2023 to May 2026 is a crucial time that provides manufacturers, suppliers, plumbers, and facility managers with the necessary time to update their product ranges, sell through older stock, and complete required training, ensuring a smooth transition to the new standards.

Until 1 May 2026, compliant non-lead free products can still be installed. After that, only certified lead free products are allowed for drinking water use.

Why Compliance Matters

  1. The Lead Free WaterMark
  1. A visible certification number
  1. Listing in the WaterMark Product Database
