Chilled Water Stations: Why More QLD Schools Are Upgrading Before Term 4?

By Term 4, the heat hits hard across Queensland.

Playgrounds heat up. Shaded areas fill fast. And old bubblers?

They’re too hot to touch

When water isn’t easy, cold, or clean, students simply drink less of it.

And that affects learning, behaviour, and wellbeing.

That’s why many schools are now installing chilled water stations. It’s not just an upgrade.

It’s a rethink of how schools support hydration in real-life conditions.

Why chilled water works better for students

Chilled water tastes better and encourages regular refills throughout the day. Modern units give students a quick, easy way to stay hydrated.

No long queues, no warm water, no bottle-filling hassles.

Here’s what makes a difference:

  • Cold water is more appealing and leads to better daily intake
  • Stations with multiple outlets reduce lunchtime pressure
  • Visible hydration points promote healthy choices over sugary drinks
  • Improved focus and behaviour are linked to consistent hydration

Even mild dehydration can affect attention and mood.

So keeping water accessible and chilled isn’t just about cooling off.

It’s about learning well.

Student Hydration: Healthy Habits. Happy Campus

How Biloela State School made the switch

In central Queensland, Biloela State School upgraded two of its older bubblers to Aquafil Hydrobank units.

The school chose chilled, filtered water and added student-designed artwork.

The new stations provided:

  • Three refill points and three fountains per unit
  • Easy access for younger students
  • Faster flow during breaks
  • A daily reminder to choose water first

Their P&C Association played a key role in securing the funding and helping guide the installation process.

Easy ways to fund your hydration upgrade

If your school is planning to install a new station, your P&C can help get it over the line.

There are many low-effort fundraising activities that work well in Term 4:

  • Water Warrior Fun Run
  • Custom drink bottle drive
  • Mufti Day for hydration awareness
  • Community raffle with healthy prize packs
  • Student-led events like car washes or bake sales
  • Small projects can have a big impact when they’re visible and used every day.
